Mr Bhakar Kumar operated successfully on me for an enlarged and infected gall bladder. Mr Kumar came very highly recommended to me by Spire Hospitals. The care, consideration and skill of Mr Kumar from initial consultation, operation and follow up was exceptional. I could not have been in better hands and would not hesitate recommending his professional services. It is due to Mr Kumar that my previously undiagnosed heart condition was discovered. So I have much to be thankful to Mr Kumar for. Life is now back to normal.

I saw Mr Kumar after being under a gastroenterologist for over 10 years, suffering from bad acid reflux and a hiatal hernia. I had been on PPIs for a long time and wanted to know my options for surgery. There is a family history of oesophageal cancer in my family and I wanted to make sure I was doing everything possible to stay healthy. I went ahead with a Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication in October 2018. Right from my first appointment with Mr Kumar he always listened to my thoughts and concerns about having surgery. He never made me feel silly for having lots of questions and always answered them with compassion and understanding. He talked me through everything from start to finish very clearly and told me very honestly about possible outcomes etc. My surgery went very well and I am very pleased that I went ahead with it. I always felt in safe hands. Mr Kumar's support after surgery was greatly appreciated and beyond anything I expected. Again, he was there to answer questions and put me at ease. All in all, I honestly couldn't be happier with my experience with Mr Kumar and I think this is because he so deeply cares about his patients and their experience. Thank you.

Profile

I am trained in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, specialising in the treatment of oesophagogastric cancer, gallbladder disease, hiatus hernia repair and anti-reflux surgery as well as open and laparoscopic hernia repair. I also have significant experience in performing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

I have been a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgeon at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital since 2014. I qualified from Leeds University Medical School and completed a two year doctorate in medicine (MD) before entering higher surgical training in Yorkshire and the North East of England. I was privileged to gain a vast amount of expertise in the specialist resection of oesophagogastric (OG) cancer in one of the largest OG cancer centres in Europe, the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne under the supervision of Professor SM Griffin OBE. Following completion of my surgical training, I was chosen for an overseas fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery with Prof. David Watson at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide, Australia.

In my work in the NHS, I have led the development of an emergency gallbladder surgery service at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, improving patient access to prompt treatment of biliary conditions. Alongside busy clinical work, I am involved in postgraduate surgical teaching and training. My research interests include the management of oesophagogastric cancer as well as biliary and upper gastrointestinal diseases.

I have co-authored a leading textbook for the post-graduate FRCS examination in general surgery and have been an invited reviewer for surgical journals.

In all of my work, my primary commitment is to the patient and ensuring they receive the best possible care. My approach to patient care was recognised by the Eastern Daily Press sponsored Norfolk and Norwich Hospital awards when I reached the final round of nominations for the 'Patient Choice- Most Outsanding Individual Member of Staff 2017'.
